Sleeping Bag Info

The primary factors you need to consider when buying a Sleeping Bag are SHAPE, WEATHER CONDITIONS, SIZE and INTENDED USE.

SHAPE - There are 2 basic shapes to consider, Rectangular and Mummy.

Rectangular sleeping bags tend to be roomier and more versatile. They can be zipped together or opened fully to make an extra blanket. For general all purpose family camping, a Rectangular sleeping bag may be your best choice.

Mummy sleeping bags are the preferred choice for hikers and backpackers. They are usually lighter and more compact. They also tend to be warmer. Many mummy bags come with a hood for added warmth.

WEATHER CONDITIONS - summer camping at sea level is a lot different than 4 season or high altitude camping. Most sleeping bags have a Temperature Rating assigned by the manufacturer. The rating, expressed in degrees, is the lowest temperature that the average person will find comfortable. For most people, a good 3 season camping temperature rating of 20 or 30 derees should be adequate. For high altitude or cold weather camping consider a O degree and below model. When in doubt, buy a colder rated bag. Whatever the temperature rating, make certain you use a Ground Pad for additional insulation and comfort.

SIZE - most major manufacturers offer sleeping bags in various sizes. Typically, bags are available Regular, Long, Kid's size, and Extra Roomy. Remember, rectangular bags tend to be roomier than mummy bags. Check the manufacturer's specs for the exact dimensions.

INTENDED USE - the primary outdoor uses tend to be either Family Camping or Backpacking. For family camping most people go with comfort. While backpackers consider weight, size and compactness to be more important than comfort.

OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER - other important factors to consider when selecting a sleeping bag.

INSULATION - most bags use Down or Synthetic fill. There are plusses and negatives for both materials. Down is warmer and more compact than synthetic fill, but it must be kept dry and is more expensive. Synthetic nylon or polyester are more common than Down and less expensive. They also dry out more quickly and tend to require less care.

LINING - most bags are lined with either nylon, cotton, cotton blend or fleece. All are quite acceptable. Nylon is lighter and usually found in mummy bags, while cotton tends to feel a bit more comfortable.

QUILTING - better sleeping bags are usually quilted. Quilting tends to keep the insulation from moving around and bunching up inside the bag.

CARRY BAG AND SLEEPING PAD - you will need both. The carry bag helps to maintain your bag's good looks and overall condition. It also makes it easier to pack and store when not in use. A sleeping pad is an absolute must for comfort, dryness and warmth.
